Two studies reveal risks of advanced technology in vehicles

Two recent studies revealed that drivers are at a high risk of being distracted when using the hands-free, advanced technology equipped in an increasing number of vehicles, Fox News reported on October 7.

According to the first study, the “infotainment systems” in some new vehicles–designed for drivers to safely utilize technology while focusing on the road–were found to actually increase distraction. A second study that analyzed the use of voice-enabled smartphone commands while driving found that this is not a safe or efficient method of navigating technology in the car. The two studies conducted by researchers in Utah and AAA claimed that these systems are prone to error and thus require more attention from drivers.
