General Motors to settle $35 million for untimely recall

American car maker General Motors (GM) will have to settle a $35 million fine issued to them by the U.S. Transportation Department for failing to issue an immediate recall of millions of their vehicles that possessed a defect, CBS News reported on May 16.

The huge penalty was imposed on GM after federal investigators discovered they did not immediately issue a recall of 2.6 million compact cars with a defective ignition switch. The defect, known about by GM for at least a decade, resulted in several deaths and injuries. U.S. Transportation Department Secretary Anthony Foxx stated the automaker did not meet public safety obligations and that the penalty imposed to them should serve as a warning to other manufacturers. GM reportedly agreed to settle the fine.
