NHTSA announces program to promote the safety of elderly drivers

A plan to further improve the safety of elder drivers and their passengers was recently introduced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The five-year strategic plan of the NHTSA was designed in order to address the alarming increase in vehicle-related deaths and injuries involving older drivers. The NHTSA said the plan will promote the well-being of elder drivers.

In 2012, 5,560 drivers aged 65 and above were killed in car accidents. Additionally, 214,000 elderly people were injured in car accidents in 2012. These numbers indicate a significant increase in the number of car accidents involving elderly people.

Sustaining injuries in car accidents due to other people’s negligence could be physically and financially damaging.
