Statewide crackdown on drunken drivers during Labor Day weekend

Police Departments across the state of Wisconsin are participating in a campaign to reduce the number of drunken drivers between now and Labor Day weekend. The campaign is called “Drunk Driving — Over the Limit. Under Arrest.” and it started August 24 and will  continue through Labor Day, September 6.

The campaign will include more patrol units to be on the road and for extended hours in order to keep an extra eye out for impaired drivers. Officials from Mothers Against Drunk Driving have said that if the campaign can prevent one accident from happening then it will be worth it.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, alcohol-related crashed killed 238 people and injured almost 4,000 in 2009 alone. The department in Beloit participates in the campaign every year and said that last year, 15 OWI arrests were made during the crackdown.
