Car Brakes: Disc Brakes

Brakes are one of the most important elements of your vehicle. Without the ability to reliably slow and stop, motor vehicle accidents are unavoidable. The brakes in your automobile are likely one of two kinds: drum brakes or disc brakes. There are some major differences between each type, with disc brakes proving more reliable in the long-term.

Unfortunately, brakes of both types are liable to overheat and fail under certain circumstances. You may not be at fault if you’ve been in an accident caused by failing brakes. You have a right to safe, functioning brakes for your automobile. Disc Brakes

Unlike drum brakes (in which a brake shoe presses against the inside of the wheel to stop it), a disc brake uses a brake pad attached to a mechanical arm called a brake caliper to slow the wheel. Because disc brakes are much more efficient at dissipating heat than their drum brake cousins, they are much less likely to suffer from brake fade. Brake fade occurs when the brakes overheat and are no longer able to apply friction to the wheel, causing the wheel to spin freely.

Disc brakes are far more common today than drum brakes, for this very reason. However, it’s important to realize that they are not immune from brake fade, and can indeed suffer from the problem in certain circumstances.
