April: National Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Posted on Thursday, April 26th, 2012 at 8:11 am

The month of April represents National Distracted Driving Awareness Month and officials across the nation are working to make sure that the drivers are reminded to pay attention while behind the wheel of a car.

According to National Highway Traffic and Safety officials, distracted driving can occur when a person is doing any activity that may divert their attention from the road. This may include texting, talking on a cell phone, reading a map, watching a video, talking to passengers, grooming, eating and drinking.

Data shows that distracted driving is most likely to occur in accidents involving teen drivers and nearly 40 percent of teenagers surveyed stated that they have been in the vehicle when a driver has been using a cell phone while driving and this action put the other people in the car in danger.

Number of car accidents increases on Tax Day

Posted on Thursday, April 19th, 2012 at 3:46 pm

A new study was released this year about the number of fatal traffic fatalities that occur each year on Tax Day.

After researchers analyzed car accident data over the past 30 years, they found that the number of fatal car crashes that occur on Tax Day tend to be 6 percent higher than any other day in the month.

The number of accidents that occur on this day over the past 30 years has been 6,783 and when divided over that time period it is nearly 226 each Tax Day. Researchers think that this increase in accidents may be because drivers are racing to get the post office or under a large amount of stress from the deadline.

Two people were injured after a two-car crash in Benton, Wis. last week.

The accident occurred as an 81-year-old man was driving a vehicle eastbound with a 71-year-old passenger. The driver somehow lost control of the vehicle, possibly due to an underlying health condition, causing his vehicle to swerve across the lanes of traffic.

The car then left the roadway and into the parking lot of a business before striking a parked car. The two people inside the vehicle were both injured, but their current condition is unknown.  Police continue to investigate the accident.
