Starting July 1, Wisconsin will tighten up their laws against drunk driving.

The idea to become stricter on drunk driving laws was deliberated on after the number of drunk drivers that were booked into jail between May 4 and May 16, which was 34 people. This new law is what officials call a step in the right direction. The new law will target teenage offenders and those will multiple infractions.

One new penalty will be if there is a person 16 years of age or younger in the car when someone is stopped for drunken driving, it will no longer be a traffic offense, it will be misdemeanor which makes it a crime.

After a person’s third offense there will now be a mandatory jail sentence of 45 days instead of the 30 that it is right now. Also, ignition interlock devices will be installed for people who receive a second OWI and if their blood alcohol is 0.15 or higher on a first OWI offense.
